Spousal sponsorships: Open work permits for some spouses and dependent children
In 2023, IRCC introduced a temporary public policy allowing some spouses and dependent children inside Canada to apply for open work permits while their spousal sponsorship applications are processed. This marks a significant change, as previously only certain in-Canada applicants under the Spouse or Common-Law Partner Class (SCLPC) could qualify. Under this policy, eligible applicants must maintain valid temporary resident status, share the same residential address with their Canadian sponsor, and have submitted a complete spousal sponsorship application. The open work permit can be granted for up to two years, providing families with greater stability and earlier integration in Canada.
