BREAKING NEWS for PGWP Holders: New 18-Month Extension Just Announced!

Finally, the news all PGWP holders have been hoping for – Today, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced a new Post Graduate Work Permit 18-Month Extension for PGWP holders whose work permits are expiring in 2023!

Who is eligible for the new 18-month PGWP extension?
All Post Graduate Work Permit holders whose PGWPs have expired or are expiring in 2023 will be eligible for the new 18-month extension.
The new extension will also be made available to those PGWP holders who were eligible for an extension in 2022.
When and how can I apply?
As of April 6, 2023, PGWP holders who are eligible for the new 18-month extension will receive a message from IRCC, asking them to login into their IRCC secure accounts to update their personal information and opt-in for the new PGWP extension.
This is a simplified application process, whereby you will “opt-in” rather than submitting a traditional application.
When will I be able to resume working?
Similar to the previous PGWP extension, eligible applicants who apply will receive an interim work authorization email. This email will enable you to continue working in Canada for an additional 18-months.
The interim work authorization email should be affixed to your expired PGWP and shared with your employer as evidence that you can continue working in Canada.
What if my status expired more than 90 days ago?
Normally applicants are only given a 90-day grace period to restore their status and apply for a new work permit once their legal status in Canada expires.
However, there was more good news today for former PGWP holders. If you fell out of status more than 90 days ago, you will be eligible to restore your status at the same time as applying for the new PGWP 18-month extension. This means you will also be eligible for the interim work authorization email from IRCC.
What is the rationale behind this new extension?
The Minister explained that the purpose of the extension is to allow PGWP holders to continue gaining valuable Canadian work experience, which can eventually lead to permanent residency.
The Minister acknowledged the value added by former international students to Canada, and that they want you to continue being able to live, work and contribute to the economy in Canada.
What does this mean for me?
With another 18 months to live and work in Canada, you will be able to gain more valuable Canadian work experience, increasing your chances of obtaining permanent residency in Canada, through Express Entry.
Express Entry’s Canadian Experience Class pathway requires Canadian work experience to be invited to apply. Since Express Entry is especially competitive following the pandemic, the CRS cut-off is very high and gaining this extra Canadian work experience may be essential for you to secure an ITA.
